For this project I limited my process to black or red ink on paper. The works visual approach takes influence from a broad range of subjects including Asian calligraphic scrolls, early pictorial codexes, American comics from the 50’s through 70’s and cheap flyers for punk music shows. Mixing and matching from my visual and psychological memory (as accurate or inaccurate as it may be) and pictorial images found from research I create fictitious scenes and moments that are at once impossible but still based on my own true history of personal experience.
The images amount to a sort of pictogram vocabulary that illustrates a personal narrative of experience. Pictorial fiction and non –fiction alike become intertwined within the topography of representation. Ultimately for myself a building I draw in downtown Los Angeles with giant battleship cannons mounted within it’s architecture shares the same space of reality as a map of a embattled faraway city that I have never heard of. In this regard the works may seem to take a inaccurate perspective on the history represented but rather it is my effort in these works to not just illuminate history but to modify the actual experience of it.
